Background/rationale: In the Pacific island of Guam, gynecological cancers are some of the most prevalent cancers among women, with cervical cancer ranking third and uterine cancer ranking fifth. However, substantial barriers exist for discussing gynecological cancer screening and treatment, in part due to norms of modesty and shame avoidance within Pacific island cultures. Methods: In response to the expressed interest of gynecological cancer patients and informed by scholarly literature, the author developed a specialized support group for gynecological cancers (SSGGC) to meet the unique needs of cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancer patients and survivors in Guam. Impact on practice: The SSGGC provides a safe space for gynecological cancer patients and survivors to talk privately about their cancer journey with others who have faced similar experiences. The goal is to create an environment where gynecological cancer screening and treatment are embraced, shifting from a focus on shame to an emphasis on Pacific island cultural values that empower and uplift women. Discussion: Promoting cultural values and addressing shame can help support positive health outcomes for gynecological cancer patients and survivors in Guam. Discussion will focus on the development of the SSGGC and the successes and challenges of incorporating a cultural focus in gynecological cancer support services in a Pacific island community.
