Rationale:
This project addresses the critical need for support in addressing the unique sexual health challenges faced by people with cancer (PWC). Drawing on seven years of personal cancer experience, professional expertise in oncosexual occupational therapy, somatic sexology, neurological rehabilitation, and a decade of working in sexual health both clinically and community education. The project focuses on developing gender-inclusive resources tailored to the specific oncosexual side effects of various cancer treatments, rather than by cancer type.
Method:
A mixed-methods survey was distributed globally via online cancer support and caregiver groups. Participants included patients and their partners across diverse identities from Australia, USA, UK, South Africa, and various European countries. The survey used both multiple-choice and short-answer formats to explore experiences of intimacy-related side effects, resource topic preferences, and resource format preferences.
Impact on Practice:
The project aims to improve quality of life for cancer survivors by offering practical support mechanisms.
The interventions address physical challenges such as pain and genital dysfunction, neurological issues like loss of libido and orgasm, and psychosocial factors such as body confidence and partner dynamics. The resources developed include short info-educational videos, a comprehensive all-in-one written guide, a nine-part side-effect-specific mini-book series, and accessible online training programs. These materials simplify complex medical research for PWC, their partners, and healthcare providers, designed for use in clinics, communities, and homes.
Discussion:
This project highlights the importance of addressing oncosexual side effects in cancer care rather than gender or cancer-type. Expanding these resources to healthcare providers and integrating them into clinical practice would be beneficial. It is recommended that future projects include collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals and peer-support programs to ensure PWC receive comprehensive sexual health support.
