“All New Lung Cancer Diagnoses should have access to the support from a Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse”

Background/rationale

A diagnosis of lung cancer is a scary, life changing and distressing experience that no one should navigate without access to appropriate support.  Introduction of the Lung Foundation Australia Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse Programme has enabled all newly diagnosed lung cancer patients within Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) to be supported by a Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse. Prior to the introduction of Lung Foundation Australia Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse Programme not all patients had met a Lung Cancer Nurse.

The Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse plays a key role as a familiar and empathetic single point of contact improving access to education, psychosocial support, and coordinated treatment pathways in the complexities of the health care system. Early engagement with these nursing services enhances patient outcomes, advocacy and optimises the overall treatment experience.

Methods

Lung Cancer MDT data was reviewed pre and post the implementation of the Lung Foundation Australia Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist position to check how many patients received Lung Cancer Nursing support.

Impact on Practice

Lung Cancer MDT data showed that only 40% of patients had contact with a Lung Cancer Nurse at diagnosis prior to the implementation of a LFA Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse. Post the commencement of the LFA Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse data shows that specialist lung cancer nursing support has increased to 95-100 %.

Discussion

Data demonstrated a significant improvement in nursing support for patients diagnosed with lung cancer following the introduction of the Specialist Lung Cancer Nursing Position.  The input of increased dedicated Nurse Specialist support has contributed to earlier intervention, improved psychosocial support, education and a more coordinated approach to patient care, therefore contributing positively to the overall treatment journey and outcomes for patients
