Western and Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (WCMICS) has introduced a Workforce Quality Improvement Skills Program to empower frontline workers in enhancing their improvement and project management skills. We recognise that those working within the health services are best positioned to identify areas for improvement, and this program equips them with the necessary training and support to drive successful and sustainable changes to benefit cancer patient care.

The program comprises two stages:

  1. Skills Masterclass Series: This series offers practical workshops covering essential quality improvement (QI) methodologies and tools, such as data analysis, communication strategies, and project management basics. Delivered in both face-to-face and online formats, participants are provided with templates and resources to support their learning and application.
  2. IGNITE Mentorship Program: A six-month initiative where selected participants receive intensive training in project management and improvement science. They are guided through managing their own medium-scale QI projects, with mentorship and coaching to develop their leadership skills.

By fostering a capable workforce with hands-on experience, the program enables frontline staff to lead impactful QI initiatives that improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Upon completion, participants will gain confidence in managing improvement projects within their teams, and will have ongoing access to a supportive online community, ensuring continued professional growth and collaboration.
