Purpose: The McGrath Model of Care (MMoC) is an evidence-based model of care for cancer nursing. Implementation science frameworks can help ensure that the MMoC is used effectively, efficiently, and consistently across different settings. Using recognized implementation theories and strategies to guide the MMoC can identify factors that may help or hinder nurses to use the MMoC within their health service.
Procedures: Co-design workshops, literature reviews, identified optimal care pathways, a consensus survey, and feasibility workshops were undertaken to develop the MMoC. In preparation for implementation, the research team conducted a one-hour workshop to consider the 73 Expert Recommendation for Implementing Change (ERIC) strategies to determine relevance to the MMoC and practical ways to achieve each strategy. Once relevant strategies had been identified, an implementation plan was developed.
Results: The MMoC describes activities and resources for specialist cancer nurses to guide clinical nursing skills in accordance with Fitch’s supportive care framework. The MMoC is structured around six inter-connected phases of cancer care, with a focus on priority populations and designed with the identification of patient needs in mind. In order to implement the MMoC consistently and effectively, the implementation plan incorporated Communication, Technology, Data, Education and Training, Leadership and Culture, and Evaluation and Measurement domains. Specifically, 51 ERIC strategies were identified as relevant resulting in preparation of an online training module, in-person training workshops, engagement with health service managers, and plans for dissemination to the wider cancer care sector.
Conclusion and clinical implications: An independent evaluation of the MMoC will be undertaken commencing in 2025. Evaluating the implementation of the MMoC will enable consideration of how well the MMoC core components are delivered, whether the MMoC is adaptable to local needs and resources, and cancer nurses’ adoption of the MMoC into practice.
