In 2020, The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) in Ireland outlined a Model of Care for Psycho-Oncology. Subsequently, multidisciplinary teams (MDT) were funded nation-wide to address the wide range of psychosocial needs of people with cancer.
This presentation will outline the process of implementing a Psycho-Oncology MDT in the South East region of Ireland over the course of two years, including navigating challenges inherent in developing a new service in a large public hospital system. Attendees will receive an honest glimpse into the administrative, interpersonal, cultural, and practical barriers involved in sustainable program development.
The presenter will suggest creative solutions for navigating challenges in a resource-scarce environment, including leveraging and building community partnerships, and integrating evaluation of program effectiveness into service provision. Preliminary outcomes of this program's effectiveness will be provided, alongside plans for further growth and development.
This presentation will be useful for any professional hoping to develop or refine a psycho-oncology program in an environment unfamiliar with supportive care services.
