The impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on sexual wellbeing on individuals, their intimate partners and relationships is identified in research but the reality of the issue being acknowledged in the clinical setting is very contingent on clinician confidence in the topic and referral options.

The theme of the Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Service’s (LMICS) Annual Forum in August 2024 was ‘Cancer and Sexuality’- inspired by speakers at the 2023 COSA conference. Following this I approached LMICS in 2025 as part of my Master’s studies at Sydney University.

The aim was for a scoping review for a Community of Practice (CoP) in the Loddon Mallee region that focused on Cancer and Sexuality, but the interest and support was such that a preliminary CoP took place.

Using clinician interviews, the structure of the first CoP was formulated and occurred in May 2025. Future themes and interest were gained via survey of attendees and interested parties. These themes were grouped and the feedback about content and structure summarised.

The interest in the first Cop was very encouraging and with eighty-four registrations and seventy attendees. The majority of attendants and respondents to the survey and interviews were nursing and allied health professionals.  This may reflect the professional cohorts that are positioned to have the clinical relationship resulting in the conversation.

The CoP supports clinicians and encourages increased knowledge in roles and different clinical approaches. It strengthens the referral network and increases clinical confidence in being able to inquire and respond to topics about sexual wellbeing. People living with cancer in rural and regional have decreased access to the relevant wholistic care due to the knowledge and access deficits, and the CoP for Cancer and Sexual wellbeing is a uniquely themed approach to support this cohort.
